Seattle is spoiled for flat water. Within a short drive of the city you can paddle a calm no-wake lake, glide past houseboats with the skyline behind you, or chase Mount Rainier views across open water. Here are our favorite places to paddle board (and kayak) near Seattle, roughly easiest to most adventurous — plus a few honest notes on parking, wind, and crowds.

Every spot below is an easy drive from our pickup in Tukwila, one block from the Seattle line. Our inflatable boards and kayaks pack down to fit in any car, so you’re not tied to a roof rack or a single launch.

1. Green Lake — best for beginners

Green Lake is the gentlest introduction to paddling in Seattle: it’s small, calm, and no motorized boats are allowed, so the water stays glassy. The downside is its popularity — on a hot weekend it gets busy, so go early. Parking is street-side and around the community center. If it’s your first time on a board, start here.

2. Lake Union — best skyline paddle

Right in the middle of the city, Lake Union gives you the Seattle skyline, the Space Needle, and the famous houseboats all in one loop. Launch near Gas Works Park for the classic view. Two cautions: it’s a working lake, so watch for boat wakes, and stay clear of the seaplane lanes — Kenmore Air takes off here. Mornings are calmest.

3. Lake Washington — best big-water views

The region’s huge lake delivers wide-open water, the Seattle and Bellevue skylines, and Mount Rainier on a clear day. Sheltered bays like Andrews Bay (off Seward Park) stay calmer, while the open lake can get windy and busy with powerboats in the afternoon. 4. Lake Sammamish — best for families

A little further east near Issaquah, Lake Sammamish tends to run warmer and has easy access from Lake Sammamish State Park. It’s a relaxed, family-friendly option with room to spread out.

5. Angle Lake — closest to pickup

If you want to be on the water fast, Angle Lake in SeaTac is just minutes from our Tukwila pickup. It’s small, calm, and has a tidy park with a launch — a perfect quick evening paddle.

A few tips before you go

• Go early. Wind and boat traffic both pick up in the afternoon; mornings are glassy.
• Wear your life vest. It’s included with every rental, and required for kids.
• Check the wind. Open water on Lake Washington or Lake Union can get choppy — when in doubt, pick a sheltered bay or a no-wake lake.
• Bring the dry bag. Phones and keys live in the included dry bag and waterproof case.
