Spring
The water wakes up. Long evenings start and the boating season officially opens.
Opening Day of Boating Season
Seattle’s biggest boating tradition, traditionally the first Saturday in May. A decorated boat parade runs the Montlake Cut while crowds line both banks. Paddlers raft up along the edges to watch.
Duck Dodge
A gloriously unserious sailboat race every Tuesday evening all summer. Themed nights, costumes, and a party at the end. Fun to paddle out and watch, just stay clear of the racing fleet.
Summer
Peak season. Warm water, festivals, fireworks, and the busiest weekends of the year.
Fourth of July on Lake Union
The fireworks barge anchors on Lake Union and a huge flotilla gathers to watch. Spectacular from the water, but it is crowded and dark. Bring lights, go early, and stay well clear of the barge exclusion area.
Milk Carton Derby
A Seafair tradition where homemade boats built from milk cartons race across Green Lake. Very family friendly and a great excuse to be on the calmest water in the city.
Seafair Weekend
The Blue Angels and the unlimited hydroplanes, 2026. Important: the race course and air show box are a Coast Guard restricted zone and no vessel may enter. Paddle outside it, or pick a different lake.
Seattle Paddle Rave
A DJ boat anchors on Lake Union and a thousand paddlers dance around it at sunset. Free, and anyone with a board can join. Dates drop about two weeks ahead.
Warmest water of the year
Late summer is when the shallow lakes hit their peak temperature. Lake Sammamish is usually the warmest swimmable water around Seattle, which makes August the friendliest month to learn.
Fall
The quiet reward. Glassy mornings, no crowds, and color in the mountains.
The best paddling month nobody talks about
Boat traffic drops off after Labor Day but the water stays warm and the mornings turn to glass. If you only paddle once a year, September mornings are the move.
Fall color on the mountain lakes
Larch and maple color comes to the Cascade lakes in October. Rattlesnake, Kachess, and Diablo are stunning and nearly empty. The water is cold, so dress for it.
Winter
Short days, serious cold, and one genuinely magical event.
Christmas Ship Festival
A parade of lighted ships tours local waterfronts through December with choirs singing on deck. Most people watch from shore, and honestly that is the right call in December water temperatures.

Things that are not on anyone’s calendar but should be.
Full moon paddles
A calm lake under a full moon is one of the best paddles you will ever have. Go with a friend, bring a white light, and stick to small, protected, no-motor water.
Discover Pass free days
Washington waives the Discover Pass parking fee on a handful of days each year. Handy for Lake Sammamish State Park and Lake Easton, which both need one the rest of the time.
