Where to Launch on Lake Sammamish

Most paddlers put in at the state park in Issaquah or at Idylwood Park in Redmond. Sammamish Landing on the east shore is quieter. A Discover Pass is required at the state park. Tap any card for directions.

Can you rent a kayak at Lake Sammamish State Park?
Yes, in season. A stand at Tibbetts Beach rents kayaks and paddle boards from Memorial Day through Labor Day, plus fall weekends when the weather allows, and those boats stay at Tibbetts. Chapin Adventures rents inflatable kayaks and boards you take anywhere: $60 for a full day or $160 for the week, picked up in Tukwila about 30 minutes away. See rentals and pricing.
Is Lake Sammamish good for kayaking?
Yes. It is shallow and sheltered, so the water stays calm and warm. A single kayak is easy to launch solo from Sunset Beach, and a double is roomy enough for two adults or a parent and child. Mornings are calmest, before the powerboats come out. Compare our kayaks.
Is Lake Sammamish good for beginners?
Very. It is shallow, forested, and sheltered from wind, so the water stays calm. It is also one of the warmest lakes around Seattle by late summer. That makes it one of the best places in the area to try a kayak or paddle board for the first time.
Do I need a Discover Pass?
Yes. To park at Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah you need a Washington State Discover Pass, sold online and at the park. Idylwood Park in Redmond is a city park and does not require one. Always check current signage for parking and swim-area rules.
Where is the best place to launch?
Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah, at Sunset and Tibbetts beaches, is the main public access with the easiest launches. Idylwood Park in Redmond is a good quieter option on the north end. Both are about 30 minutes from our Tukwila pickup.
Is the water warm enough to fall in?
By July and August, Lake Sammamish is among the warmest swimmable water in the area. Much of it is shallow, so it heats up nicely. It is a forgiving lake to learn on, and we still include USCG life vests with every rental.
What comes with the rental?
Everything you need. Kayak or board, paddle, USCG life vests, an electric pump, a dry bag, a waterproof phone case, and a Bluetooth speaker. That is about $175 of gear, included free. It all packs into any car.
