Green Lake and Lake Union are the two most popular places to paddle right inside Seattle — but they offer very different days on the water. One is a calm, motor-free pond made for beginners; the other is a buzzing city lake with skyline views and a bit more to navigate. Here’s how to choose.
The quick answer
- Choose Green Lake if you’re new, bringing kids, or just want the calmest, most relaxing paddle.
- Choose Lake Union if you want skyline and houseboat views and don’t mind sharing the water with boats and seaplanes.
Calm & difficulty
Green Lake wins on calm. No motorized boats are allowed, so the water stays flat and predictable — ideal for a first time on a paddle board or kayak. Lake Union is busier: boat wakes, paddlers, and seaplane traffic mean you’ll want a little more confidence and awareness, though mornings are noticeably mellower.
Views & scenery
Lake Union wins on views. You get the Seattle skyline, the Space Needle, and the iconic floating homes, with Gas Works Park as a launch backdrop. Green Lake is leafy and parky — pretty and peaceful, but without the postcard cityscape.
Parking & crowds
Both are popular and both fill up on warm weekends. Green Lake has street and lot parking around the park that goes early; Lake Union’s Gas Works area also fills fast. The move for either: arrive before 10am.
Getting there & gear
Both lakes are an easy drive from our pickup in Tukwila, one block from Seattle.
