Which Tacoma-area lake is best for beginners?
Wapato Lake in Tacoma is the top beginner pick. It bans gas motors, so the water stays calm and warm. American Lake is bigger and better for a longer paddle, but it gets powerboat traffic, so start early or stay near the shoreline if you are new.
Is American Lake busy with boats?
It can be, especially on summer afternoons. American Lake is a popular powerboat and swimming lake. For the calmest paddling, launch in the morning or hug the quieter shoreline. If you want flat water all day, head to motor-free Wapato Lake instead.
