Check the lake level before you drive out

Lake Tapps is a working reservoir, not a natural lake. Cascade Water Alliance fills it from the White River and holds it at recreational level roughly April 15 through September 30, then draws it down for fall and winter. Spring refill usually starts around mid-February.

When the river runs low, the refill stops and the level drops. In a dry year that can close the public boat launches before the end of September, and low water makes the ramps and shallows genuinely hazardous. Park hours, day-use fees and ramp rules also change through the season.

None of that is something we can promise from here, so check the official pages the morning you go. If Tapps is down, your rental works on any other lake in the state, and there are three good backups in the launch list below.

Where can I rent a paddle board for Lake Tapps?
Chapin Adventures rents inflatable paddle boards and kayaks that you pick up in Tukwila, about 35 minutes from the lake, and drive to any Lake Tapps launch. Allan Yorke Park runs a seasonal snack-shack rental at its beach, but hours are limited and it only covers that one spot. Bringing your own kit means you can launch anywhere on the lake, or drive to a different lake if Tapps is drawn down. See all rentals and pricing.
Where can the public launch on Lake Tapps?
There are only two public access points. North Lake Tapps Park, a Pierce County park on the northeast shore, has a sandy swim area, restrooms and a lot of open bank. Allan Yorke Park, run by the City of Bonney Lake at the south end, has a beach and docks. The rest of the shoreline is private waterfront homes.
Do I need a boat launch pass or a reservation?
For a trailered boat, yes. The Pierce County ramp at North Lake Tapps Park uses an online reservation system, and the Allan Yorke ramp is restricted to Bonney Lake residents with a paid annual pass. Hand-carried craft like an inflatable board or kayak do not use the trailer ramp at all, so you walk it down to the beach. Summer day-use parking fees still apply at the county park, and rules change year to year, so check the park pages before you go.
When is Lake Tapps actually full?
Cascade Water Alliance holds Lake Tapps at recreational level roughly from April 15 to September 30, with the spring refill usually starting around mid-February. Outside that window the reservoir is drawn down and shoreline access shrinks. In a dry summer the White River can run too low to keep filling it, which has closed the public launches early. Check the current level on Cascade's lake-levels page the morning you go.
Is Lake Tapps warm enough to swim?
In mid-summer, yes. It is a shallow reservoir that sits in the sun all day, so it is one of the warmest large lakes in the Puget Sound area from about July through early September. Spring and fall are a different story, because the water coming in is White River snowmelt. Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature, and wear your life vest.
Is Lake Tapps busy with powerboats?
Very, on summer weekends. It is a popular ski and wakeboard lake and the main basin gets choppy by mid-morning. Paddle early, paddle on a weekday, or stay in the quieter arms and near the shoreline. If you want flat water all day, Deep Lake at Nolte State Park bans gas motors and is about 20 minutes further out.
